This year, Christmas came a day early for Overboard.

On December 24, 92.5 WXRV The River featured the song “Happy Christmas” from Tidings, in conjunction with their Homegrown Music Series, a highlight of local Boston artists.

This recognition was particularly meaningful, as “Happy Christmas” features a group of children from nearby Marblehead, MA. Many thanks to them and to their director Amanda Roeder for helping us orchestrate the collaboration.

Thank you to Irene and The River team for the recognition, it was an excellent Christmas present!

Upstairs on the Square Holiday Dinner Series

Tucked away in a quiet corner of Harvard Square is the restaurant Upstairs on the Square, renowned for its delicious cuisine and prominent patrons. For this past week, however, the restaurant wasn’t just the site of great food. On December 16, 17 and 18, Upstairs on the Square hosted a private concert by Overboard to entertain their clientele with the sounds of the holidays.

Our first show was on a Tuesday, and after singing through some of our holiday repertoire we knew the following performances would be nothing but enjoyable for both us and the diners. Sure enough, the following dates allowed us to entertain audiences with songs from Tidings including “What Christmas Means to Me,” “All I Want for Christmas is You” and “Little St. Nick.”

We thank the staff of Upstairs on the Square and especially it’s owner, Mary-Katherine, for having us (and for feeding us!). We look forward to performing there again soon.

Overboard at SIMON Malls

Christmas, arguably the biggest holiday of the year, is known for many things. Trees decorated with bright lights and flashing tinsel, colorfully wrapped presents and vibrant-green mistletoe are just a few of the iconic symbols of the coming of St. Nick. But… a cappella? In the mall!? It’s preposterous!

Or is it? Over this past holiday season Overboard collaborated with regional SIMON Malls to spread holiday cheer to harried shoppers. Singing songs from Tidings, as well as other holiday classics, we watched as frenetic shoppers stopped to listen for a peaceful few minutes before continuing their quest for the perfect gift. At each of these events, we were surprised to draw a rather substantial crowd who, despite the mall’s echoing commotion, expressed their delight with a warm round of applause at the end of each set.

Thank you to Jyllian Paul, Jessica Charles and the rest of the SIMON malls staff, who were gracious and helpful hosts.

Mohegan Sun

Over the weekend of December 6-7, Overboard had the pleasure of performing for the High Rollers Club at the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, CT. While none of us can claim to be talented at “playing the odds,” we did have a great time singing songs from Tidings, as well as a few of our other holiday favorites.

Arriving early Saturday, within a few hours we were up on stage entertaining the audience with songs like “We Three Kings,” “Baby Please Come Home” and “Silver Bells” in a room that was legitimately as large as a football field. Sunday afforded a smaller room, complete with human statues that would on a whim casually turn around and point at us. I for one thought statues didn’t move, but apparently the ones at Mohegan Sun think they’re better than that.

This casino had pulled out all the stops. I mean, where else can you get Ben & Jerry’s while listening to the harmonious cacophony of slot machines, followed by dinner under an indoor waterfall? I mean, besides Niagara. It was truly one of our more entertaining gigs, and though being inside did throw off our internal clocks (everything is open all night?!), we had an excellent time going to what is unquestionably one of New England’s biggest hot spots.

It was an outstanding opportunity and we thank Mohegan for having us.

YMCA Friendraiser

During the sweltering months of summer, Crane’s Beach is a well-known haven to those on Boston’s North Shore, spectacular for a day of sand, surf and sun.

Perched high above the beach on Castle Hill is the Crane Estate, a humble 59 room “summer home” with century-old architecture and elegant Old World decor. It was here, in the cold grip of winter, that Overboard made its Ipswich debut for the Ipswich YMCA’s Friendraiser.

The evening was comprised of charitable recognition and formal dress, complete with us singing through our holiday repertoire with songs like “I’ll be Home for Christmas,” “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” and the Joni Mitchell favorite, “River.” The entire set was off mic, treating the crowd to a more intimate performance before the evening came to a close with the acknowledgment of the guests’ philanthropic contributions.

A special thanks to the Ipswich YMCA Executive Director Mr. Gerry Beauchamp who organized the event (and bought us all a drink!). His one liners were sensational.
