Hazen Union School
Most people tend to have similar a high school experience. Typically, it focuses on awkwardly fitting in, the boy/girl romance and the fact that you got stuck sitting at the nerd table during lunch (not that we’re at all bitter). In fact, most people, if given the chance, probably wouldn’t hesitate to go back and do something differently. On Friday, November 21, Overboard got that chance. Leaving our day jobs behind in Boston, we hit the road to Hardwick, VT for a workshop with and two performances for the students of Hazen Union Middle/High School.
It came as no surprise that a significant number of singers turned up for the workshop, and despite their lack of experience in a cappella, they tackled learning “Sister Golden Hair” with amazing ability and zeal. After the workshop and a “takes-us-back” high school lunch (no nerd table this time!), the auditorium was opened up and we took the stage to perform for the middle schoolers. Shortly after, the high school crowd came in, including some familiar faces from the workshop. Both crowds were genuinely excited, going so far as to sing along for Nick’s rendition of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy.”
It was an outstanding opportunity to introduce a cappella to a group of excited, talented students and we thank them and their music teachers for inviting us.
